  1. Coffee is available all over the world and is often padded out with chicory or ground peas if bought in ground form. You are therefore only likely to be assured of quality if you buy your coffee as beans. It will also be much more flavourful this way.
  2. The best coffee from Turkey and the middle east is Bauri. However it is very rare in the west as the wealthier classes in the middle east keep it for themselves.
  3. It is better to buy coffee beans in their green state as it is much easier to determine their quality than after roasting.
  4. Coffee roaster interiors are traditionally round to ensure even roasting.
  5. Coffee should not be kept in tin or ironĀ  containers as it will react and taste awful after a short time. Traditionally earthenware jars are used.
  6. In the far east coffee is not strained. They add sugar and boil it and then serve it in cups. It gives less of a caffeine rush than coffee served in the western manner.
  7. Brazil is the largest producer of coffee with 4 billion coffee trees, responsible for 40% of the world coffee production.
  8. Instant coffee has only been available for the last 100 years and was reputadly invented by a BelgianĀ  living in Guatemala.
  9. It has helped inspire revolutions. The frequenters of coffee houses in France and America prior to their revolutions against the monarchy and the British, used the places to discuss politics and plan their revolutions.
  10. Coffee could get you banned from the Olympics. Drinking 4 or 5 cups of coffee in close succession prior to an event is likely to trigger an automatic ban from Olympic events.
